How to export and import settings and content from V2 to V3

Need a copy of your V2 setup? Export a backup before restoring V2 or moving your content to V3.

Before you start

The Export and Import controls below are for Voicemod V2. V3 stores custom sounds and voices in the cloud; moving V2 content to V3 uses the separate migration tool.

Create a V2 backup

  1. Open V2 settings

    In Voicemod V2, go to Settings → General.

  2. Export your content

    Select Export, choose a folder and filename, and save the backup on your computer.

  3. Keep the file safe

    Store the exported file where you can find it before reinstalling, restoring, or migrating.

Restore a backup in V2

  1. Open Import

    In Voicemod V2, go back to Settings → General and select Import.

  2. Choose the backup

    Find your saved backup file and open it.

  3. Check your account

    If you reinstalled Voicemod from scratch, link your license again if prompted. Check the email connected to your purchase for the license details.

Moving to V3?

Use the V2 to V3 migration guide and its Import from V2 option. The V2 Import button only restores into V2.

If V2 no longer opens

The original article describes a legacy recovery method for some personal sounds in %LocalAppData%\Voicemod\memes. Make copies of the files before trying it. Some files in that folder will not play after an extension change.

  1. Find the older sound files

    Open the V2 memes folder and identify the .dat files that may be your own sounds.

  2. Test copies as audio

    On copies only, change the extension from .dat to .wav and test them one by one. Files created by Voicemod may not play this way.

  3. Add recovered sounds again

    Import any playable files back into Voicemod individually.

Legacy recovery needs review

This method is based on older V2 file behavior. Confirm it against the version in use before publishing it as a general repair procedure.
